Turkey Trots

If any of you were at Open Screen Night last week, you probably remember the short documentary Ruby's Day, all about a small town in Texas, a turkey, and an annual race for turkey excellence. And you probably remember that this movie got unjustly gonged right before we were going to find out who won the second race. Well, Erik McCowan, the filmmaker, was kind enough to leave a copy of his short with us, so now I offer it up to all of you:

RUBY'S DAY

And if you weren't at Open Screen Night and don't even live in Texas and don't what I'm talking about, well, now you get to watch Ruby's Day anyway. Booya!

man. this is good. what makes it work is that everybody involved takes it so fucking seriously. if it was just a couple of drunken frat boys, chasing after a turkey with a beer in each hand, it wouldn't be nearly as amusing as watching a TEAM of four middle-aged, slightly overweight Texans, feeding their turkey PROTEIN SHAKES and training the thing on the fucking track. i don't want to say that this is like the next march of the penguins, or anything. i thought the camera work on the second race was kind of nauseauting, and there was one scene, when i couldn't see the speaker's face, cause it was in shadow. but on the whole, i definitely enjoyed it, and even laughed out loud a couple of times.

Well, gee, I'm flattered that you put this little movie up here. If you want to learn more about turkey racing, the Great Gobbler Gallop, Worthington and Cuero, take a look at the myspace site below.  It will tell you all about what happens at Turkeyfest, PLUS there is a 3 minute teaser for the full length documentary. Everything that you ever wanted to know about why this town loves its turkeys. And don't forget Turkeyfest is October 14 down in Cuero. Check out www.turkeyfest.org.

Thanks! Look forward to more open screen nights.
